ZTEM™ Aids in Sub-Basalt Basin Exploration Programs for Unconventional Oil and Gas

Over the past five years, the passive airborne EM technology of ZTEM™ has proven to be a valuable exploration tool for the mining industry. This is because ZTEM™ has been used in many mining exploration programs for structural and geoelectrical target characterizations at both regional and property scales.

The system is derived from AFMAG principles that have been adapted to traditional MT measurements and signal processing in order to obtain full magnetic tipper value samplings of ~10m. The seamless blend between MT and ZTEM™ data offers an innovative approach to aid in the challenges of unconventional exploration programs for Oil and Gas.

With the growing interest for on land, multidisciplinary geophysical programs in Sub-Basalt basins, Geotech has carried out numerical forward modelling to illustrate ZTEM™’s operating potential over extensive and remote areas.  The ZTEM™ 3D capability in conjunction with ground MT provides high spatial density resulting in critical quantitative results that constrain deeper economic targets. These constrained inversions can lead to regional controls that define the relationship between resistivity and lithology in Sub-Basalt basins. The ZTEM™ system can efficiently map the lateral thickness variation of the basalt cover and therefore provide insights into its structural architecture.

Geotech’s goal is to integrate and joint-invert  ZTEM™ and MT data with magnetic data and available seismic, well log and geologic control.  Ultimately, ZTEM™ can help mitigate risks, reduce costs, and improve quality and imaging of subsequent ground surveys resulting in an increase in success of exploratory drills.
